General Information of Nusa Penida Island

Where is Nusa Penida Island located? Nusa Penida is a small island located southeast of the island of Bali, and separated by the Badung Strait. Near this island, there are 2 other small islands, namely Nusa Lembongan Island and Nusa Ceningan Island. The three small islands in the southeastern part of the island of Bali have their own uniqueness and charm and are different from one another. The three islands are included in the government territory of Klungkung regency, Bali province.

The meaning of the word Nusa Penida comes from the Balinese language, Nusa means island and Penida comes from two words, Ped and Ida. Ped means death and Ida means power. So Nusa Penida can mean an island that has great deadly power.

Nusa Penida Island is the largest of the three islands and local people often call it Nusa Gede. Gede means big. Meanwhile, Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three islands. Especially for Nusa Lembongan, the most famous island for tourists, especially Australian tourists.

Natural Conditions & Tourism Development

The natural conditions of the island of Nusa Gede  consist of sloping land and hilly land surrounded by the sea. This island has a very dry area, and the soil in this area has a high lime content. Because of this, most of the local people chose to work as seaweed farmers, as fishermen and some also chose to become traders.

Since the beginning of 2014, Nusa Penida tourism has developed very rapidly, attracting many tourists to take a vacation. The rapid development of tourism has made many local people of Nusa Penida change their livelihoods. Some are working in accommodation, transportation, and restaurants.

The development of the tourism sector in this area is still very slow, most tourists who vacation on the island of Nusa Penida, aim to take photos and carry out Bali water sports tourism activities such as; snorkeling and scuba diving.

More rapid tourism development has occurred on the island of Nusa Lembongan, which is adjacent to this island. Most tourists who like to vacation on the island of Nusa Lembongan are tourists who like beach tourism activities in Bali.

Nusa Penida's tourist attraction lies in three things, namely:

This island is also famous for its exotic and unique tourist attractions, especially white sand beaches such as Atuh beach Nusa Penida and Broken Beach Nusa Penida. The view of the white sand beach on the island of Nusa Penida is very beautiful. In the past, white sand beach attractions on the island of Nusa Penida rarely received tourist visits. Because previously the road access to the white sand beach in Nusa Penida was inadequate.

How to Get to Nusa Penida Tourist Attractions from Bali

Nusa Penida Island and Bali Island are separated by the ocean. Therefore, there are two ways to get to Nusa Penida from Bali, namely by air using a helicopter or by sea using a fast boat.

If you depart from the island of Bali to get to the island of Nusa Penida, the best and cheapest way to get to the island of Nusa Penida is by sea. There are several places in Bali that have departure routes from Bali to Nusa Penida island using boats/fast boats. The following is a list of fast boat locations to Nusa Penida from Bali:

1. Sanur Beach Port To Nusa Penida

The most popular location to get a fast boat to Nusa Penida island from Bali is the Sanur beach port. Because at the port of Sanur beach there are many choices of fast boats, from cheap to expensive ticket prices. At the Sanur beach port, there is the option of using a fast boat as well as the option of using a traditional boat/dinghy.

In addition, the location of Sanur beach is very strategic, because it is in the tourist area of southern Bali. So if you are staying in the tourist area of Seminyak Bali, then heading to Sanur beach is only 16 kilometers with an estimated travel time of 50 minutes.

2. Serangan Port Bali to Nusa Penida

One of the ferry ports which is also located in the southern part of Bali is the Serangan Harbor. The location of the Serangan port is close to the location of the Benoa port. Several fast boat operators at Serangan Harbor provide crossing services to Nusa Penida, such as Gili Getaway. However, most of the fast boat operators at Serangan port provide fast boat services from Bali to Gili Trawangan and to Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

The distance to Serangan Harbor from the Kuta Bali tourist spot is closer than to Sanur beach. If you depart from the Kuta beach area of Bali to Serangan harbor, it will take 30 minutes and a distance of 14 kilometers.

Serangan Harbor for crossings is more attractive to tourists who prioritize comfort and fast boat ticket prices number two. Because Serangan Port uses a special design for Fast Boat ports, with many port supporting facilities. Passengers get on a fast boat without the need for wet feet, there is a restaurant and a very comfortable passenger waiting room.

3. Padang Bai Harbor, Karangasem

Padang Bai Karangasem, is more famous for tourists as a fast boat location with cheap ticket prices if you want to have a vacation to Gili Trawangan. Padang Bai Harbor also provides crossing services to the island of Nusa Penida using a large ferry (Roro Nusa Jaya Abadi ship) which can transport your vehicle. With a journey time of 1 hour and the ship will dock at the main port of Penida.

Most of the tourists departing from Padang Bai port head to the island of Nusa Penida, because they stay in the tourist area of East Bali, such as Amed, Tulamben, Candidasa. Local people also choose to depart from Padang Bai Karangasem port, if they cross by car.

Vacation Transportation in Nusa Penida

Public transportation in Nusa Penida is currently not available, so the option is to use a private vehicle. Personal vehicle either motorcycle or car. This island has a fairly large area so it will take about 1 hour by motorbike, from the east end to the west end of the island.

1. Rent a Motorcycle

Getting a motorbike rental service in Nusa Penida is very easy, because when you arrive at the Nusa Penida port, you will find many motorbike rental service providers. For now, the motorbike rental price in Nusa Penida is IDR 75,000/24 hours without fuel. My advice, you immediately fill up the motorcycle tank with fuel at the port. Because for now, gas stations in Nusa Penida are still very limited.

Before you decide to ride a motorcycle for transportation in Nusa Penida, it's a good idea to know the current road conditions in Nusa Penida. For now, the condition of roads to several tourist attraction areas is not as good as the roads on the island of Bali. So when you go through steep and broken roads, you must have expertise in riding a motorbike. If you feel uncomfortable driving a motorbike, then it's a good idea to choose to use a car rental service with a driver.

2. Car Rental with Driver

Another transportation option for holidays on the island of Nusa Penida is to use a car rental service with a driver and gasoline included. The price for renting a Toyota Avanza in Nusa Penida with a driver is IDR 600,000. Just like using a motorbike, your trip will still not be comfortable, because in some areas the road conditions are still damaged. But at least you have used a driver who knows very well the road conditions on the island of Nusa Penida, thus Nusa Penida Travel Guide.
